little artist birthday party

Our little troublemaker is growing up!  Eight years old.  She spends her days writing + illustrating her own children's book series, making things out of paper, and drawing pictures for people she loves.  An art party was just the thing for her!

Paint palette cupcakes are so easy.  Vanilla cake, and a big bowl of white frosting divvied up between small bowls, with different colors added to each bowl.  Cardboard from cereal boxes became the "palettes," brown side up.  Done!

I planned two simple projects for the girls to create.

First, we painted the Eiffel Tower.  They followed along with me as I drew on a big dry erase board.  Next, they traced over their pencil lines with a dark colored crayon, and we added flowers and trees. Then came the fun part ... the paint!  I showed the girls the "wet-on wet" with watercolors for the sky.  We painted the sky with clear water first, then dropped paint onto it and watched it spread.  They loved moving the paint across the paper, and how the crayons resisted the paint.

For the second project, I prepped some cardboard cameras by hot gluing slices of cardboard tubes to small boxes.  I saved these up for a few weeks before the party.

Then the girls went for it with the acrylic paints!  For the finishing touch, we used washi tape to attach a yarn "strap," and I helped them hot glue cute buttons on the top.
