French Café Party

June 29, 2015

Every year, the ladies at Latter-Day Saint churches around the world have a "Relief Society Birthday" celebration, in honor of the wonderful group of women we belong to and our faith.  This year, I was so excited to be heading up the committee.  We decided the theme "You Are Kneaded," based on this inspiring Women's Conference talk.  We managed to go all out and turn our cultural hall into a French café, even on our small budget!

Again, butcher paper is this party-throwers best friend.  With some acrylic paints, a big white piece became our "store front," a couple grey pieces became stone walls, and black butcher paper was painted with our theme as a shop sign. I pulled out the blue paper awning I made for Nina's Paris party and put it to good use again!  A cute borrowed bicycle and a woven basket bag filled with baguettes brought the scene to life, along with some (fake) potted plants.

Small vases of fresh flowers went on each table (day old are unbelievably inexpensive and still so pretty).  A small table at the door held the party favors; tiny French Bonne Maman jam jars for everyone to take home.  I baked a couple loaves of artisan bread to give away to the winners of the drawing.

We asked one of the kindest, wisest, sweetest sisters in our ward to share a brief message about how we are all different but "kneaded" by each other and in the work of the gospel.  Of course she did an amazing job.  (Thank you Donna Davey!)

Bon appétit!

Bon appétit!

Apart from chatting it up with all the ladies, the best part of any party is ... the FOOD.  Right?  These ham and/or turkey sliders can be made ahead of time for a large group and are so good.  Veggie cups with dip at the bottom are super easy, and my friend Leesa put together the most beautiful bowl of fruit.  Cucumber Lemonade is a family favorite from my aunt Heidi and perfect for any summer gathering.  I forgot to get a photo, but the recipe is below.

Okay, now for the desserts.  If I need an excuse to have an entire table full of French desserts, trust me, I can always find one.  Éclairs, palmiers (thanks Costco), chocolate mousse (cheater style recipe), and a cheesecake for good measure (even though it's not necessarily French).

Big thanks to all the super ladies on the committee and to everyone who attended.  It was such a fun night.  Even if I was forced to take home some leftover desserts. ;)

CUCUMBER LIMEADE

2 liters lemon lime soda

12 oz. can limeade concentrate

3 drops almond extract

1 cucumber, peeled

2-3 sliced limes

a whole bunch of ice

Mix together soda, limeade concentrate, and almond extract. Cut cucumber in half.  Puree one half in a blender and add to the soda/limeade mixture.  Slice the other half to float in the limeade along with sliced limes.  Add ice and enjoy!

Hello! I'm Heather. Illustrator, writer, photographer and mom of five.  I also love to plan a good party!

Gosh I miss that tall blond kid!

While he was in the MTC (missionary training center) last year, there happened to be a distant relative in his district (third cousin once removed I think). My mom had told Ben to look for Elder David Keller but I t I’m hosting a “Midsummer Garden Party" watercolor workshop! Next Thursday, June 25th at 7:00 pm in Sandy. Come learn how to design and paint your very own floral wreath! $45 reserves your spot and covers all supplies. Space is limite RENOVATION UPDATE! 🏡🔨Yes, there are windows missing on my house at the moment. 😳😂 After sanding several deck boards, we discovered that a huge section of the support joists were rotted. Then as Clayton started removing those, he discovered that t “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actu I’m gonna go out on a limb here (pun intended) and say that there’s nothing Clayton and my dad can’t do! Especially with climbing gear + chainsaws. 🌲🪓#myveryowncharlesingalls #dadstrailworkskillscominginhandy #nowourviewisevenmore Olivia’s mask wins! 😷😂 Most people busted up laughing when they saw her, others just stared with a little smile on their faces, and others jumped out of their shoes and put their hands on their hearts 😱 (and then they laughed). One guy gave We’ve had such a warm welcome to our new neighborhood. I love the people here already! There are many who have lived here 40-50+ years and are just the sweetest. One neighbor named Cheryl (who has lived here since 1974!) showed up at our door w Well hello!! 👋🏻 It’s been a few weeks but I’m alive! 😆 We are loving the new place + are finally feeling a bit more settled (although there are still a few unopened boxes!). .
Even though we did a yard sale and several trips to the DI My father-in-law’s greenhouse. 😍 He sent me home with hanging geraniums, tomato + cucumber plants for Mother’s Day! 🌱🍅🥒❤️ BEST. ROOMIES. EVER!!! Erika and JJ, you are GEMS. I don’t know how to repay you for letting us stay with you for the last 2 1/2 months while we’ve been in between houses ... your generosity has truly touched our hearts!! 😭❤️🙏🏻 Thanks MOVING WEEK!! // Seven months ago we listed our house where we lived for sixteen years, with no idea where we were going. It sounds crazy, but we just felt it was time for a new chapter ... and here is where we are finally landing!
